My husband, oldest son, and I had the pleasure of enjoying a meal at C&C Supper Club in Fish Creek, Wisconsin (in the heart of Door County) during a recent trip to Door County. The building houses a supper club for dining along with a bar with games and live entertainment on many weekends. We were very hungry when we arrived so we went directly to the dining room to eat. We were offered a table near the large fireplace in the dining room. It was a nice cozy place to sit on the cool fall evening we dined there. The dinner entrees at the restaurant come with a choice of potato, soup or salad, and bread. In addition, the supper club has an extensive wine collection they have a suggested wine for each of the entrees they offer. One of our diners opted for soup with his meal and ordered the French Onion soup. He said it was delicious and that it tasted how French onion soup should taste, with a thick hearty soup base, a piece of crusty French bread placed on top of the soup, and topped with bubbling hot cheese. The other members of our dining party had salad instead of soup. The restaurant has 4 distinct salad choices; a house salad with your choice of 12 dressings; an iceberg wedge with choice of dressing; beefsteak tomato slices with bleu cheese; and a spinach salad with hot bacon dressing. We had the house salad and spinach salad. Both were very good and had a pretty presentation. Two of us decided on the Alaskan King Crab Legs as our main entrйe. They were a great choice. The crab legs come pre-split so which makes it much easier to pull out the sweet crabmeat and dip it into the melted butter that was provided. Our only complaint was that we couldn’t get all the crab legs finished before they started to get cold. The other member of our dining party had the surf and turf, of which there were several options. He chose prime ribs and shrimp. Both items were cooked to perfection and tasted very good. The rosemary baby red potatoes that he chose to have with his meal were also very good. The bread that came with the meal was also very good. Our only complaint was that it was served cold. The bread would have tasted even better had it been served warm. For dessert one of our dining party had an ice cream drink, the restaurant’s purple hooter which was a combination of vanilla ice cream, raspberry liquor, and crиme de cocoa. It was served in tall glass and was topped off with whipped crиme and red sprinkles. The other two members of our dining party tried the raspberry йclair cake for dessert. It was a rich dessert that tasted a lot like cheesecake. It had a mousse filling, raspberries, and йclair puffs in it, and was topped with pecans. It was very good. The meal, including dessert and beverages and tip was a little over $100 for three people and we felt it was well worth the money. Everything we had tasted good and was of good quality. It’s a good place to have a relaxing dinner when you’re in Door County.

If, like me, you believe self development is a life journey that is never completed, you know that the only sure thing is that the search for self development is far from being a sure thing. The journey will entail more failures than successes, more loss than gain and more self-doubt than we think we can endure. The only way to improve one’s self is to challenge the habits and assumptions we have gathered along the way. To go out on a limb with no guarantee of finding what we want takes courage. No ‘success plan’ would contemplate such a course of action! So, if we can’t get succor from the self improvement ‘gurus’, who can we turn to? The answer, I believe, is to look to the people who have always explored every single aspect of the human condition. They did not always find the answer, but they all had courage. They are of course, the world’s artists. How can a painting help us toward our goal of self improvement you might ask? Well, some paintings help to bring serenity and a feeling of inner peace; I feel this whenever I look at an Impressionist painting, especially paintings by Berthe Morisot. She was never recognized as a great artist during her lifetime; she was relegated to the category of "feminine" artists because of her usual subject matter — women, children, and domestic scenes. Her paintings are intensely intimate. She is an example of someone who never gave up on pursuing what she thought was worth while despite being largely ignored. Jackson Pollock instills different but equally powerful feelings. I used to believe all modern artists “just throw a bit of paint on a canvas and call it art”. My preconceptions were swept away when I was lucky enough to attend an exhibition devoted to his work. His paintings were beautiful and challenged the way I look at a painting. The search for your inner self is all about challenging your currently held notions. Music is probably the easiest of the arts for us to accept as an aid toward our search for self development. How often does a certain piece of music make us feel happy, relaxed, romantic, hopeful, fulfilled? You name it, music hits all the buttons. My favourite music is anything by Beethoven. His music makes me feel all of the aforementioned. He was a man who accepted nothing less than perfection. He sort redemption through his music. Ultimately, he didn’t find it and he spent much of his life feeling alone. But his courage of conviction made his life, and countless others, a better thing. His last words were "Applaud, my friends, the comedy is over.” Perhaps our greatest inspiration comes from writers. They have helped me, and millions of others, to find the inner self. Life would be a much poorer experience without our great writers. I won’t name all the writers that have inspired me; there are too many. But if there was one thing I would urge you to do, it is to read. If you’re not sure who to read then go to a library and ask! Tell the librarian what it is that you want to experience, feel or learn when you read a book. They’ll help you; don’t let shyness defeat you. If you can’t get to a library then join a reading club on the internet. The one thing I have found is that people, who love to read, love to help others to read books. So, forget about buying into those testosterone, succeed-at-all-costs seminars, ebooks and DVDs. Go and look at a painting; or lie on the sofa and listen to music, maybe dance wildly to it, cry with it, make love in time to it; or curl up and read a book that will take you where you never thought possible. You may not get to where you wished, but Art will accompany you every single step of the way.

Critical to meeting these expectations is leadership. The word "leadership" comes from a old Norse word meaning "to make go." Leadership is needed in organizations to make things go, to muster and coordinate direction, ardent commitment and resource alignment. Working with thousands of leaders of all ranks and functions during the past 21 years, I've seen that most leaders deem leadership as exclusively an on-the-job dynamic. They don't see it as a life dynamic. Companies seeking more from their employees must promote leadership that delivers more, and that leadership can only deliver more if it is effective both on and off the job. If you don't make your leadership your life and your life your leadership, you diminish both your leadership and your life. The reasons are simple. The best leaders establish a deep, human, emotional connection with the audience. Why is that necessary to achieve organizational results? Leadership isn't about getting people to do what they want to do. If people simply had to do what they wanted to do, leaders wouldn't be needed. Instead, leadership is about getting people to do what they don't want to do and be totally committed to doing it. These people have a good chance of achieving a lot more results, achieving those results faster, and achieving "more, faster" on a continual basis. One may tyrannically order people to get results, but the effectiveness of such leadership is not as consistent nor as substantial as having people make the free choice to get results. And people will make that free choice mainly in an environment in which deep, human, emotional relationships are developed. Look at the leaders in your life. I'm sure you've been at the receiving end of both the tyrants and those with whom you've had deeply beneficial relationships with. Weren't you more likely to go all out for those leaders who promoted an environment in which those better relationships flourished? Clearly, that's an environment one should seek to establish in one's life as well. The relationships you develop as a leader can be similar to the relationships you should develop in your life outside your job. In my many seminars on the Leadership Talk, I have seen people use my processes outside their job, with their spouses, friends, and children, etc. There are many values that should be promoted in our lives: trust, honesty, integrity, coming through on commitments, fairness, tenacity, tolerance, and more. Let's "trust" as one example. I believe we should live a life of trusting others. I call it "living in trust." Of course, trust can be taken too far, and we may open ourselves up to be deceived and betrayed. My wife says I often trust others too much; and certainly I have paid in many ways over my life for such a propensity. But though we may be deceived if we trust too much, we will nevertheless suffer more if we don't trust enough. Living in trust means extending trust without conditions until that trust is clearly betrayed. And then, depending on the circumstances, we may continue to extend trust even if it is betrayed. For when it is betrayed, we may not necessarily be the poorer for it. We may indeed be the richer; for without trust, we cannot establish deep relationships. My view of trust in life can be extended to leadership. Leadership is about getting continual increases in great results. To do that, leaders must engender trust in the people they lead. In fact, great results can't accrue without strong bonds of trust established between the leader and the people. I've often said that it is better for a leader to buy the Brooklyn Bridge for a nickel rather than to sell it for one. People will not be led by you to do extraordinary things unless they trust you; but they won't trust you unless they know you are taking the risk to trust them. In fact, many organizations get into trouble when the people don't trust or stop trusting their leaders, and when their leaders stop trusting them. So, trust operates both in our lives and on our jobs as leaders and must be cultivated both on and off the job. There are many other values that should be manifested in both the life one leads and the leadership one manifests. Online home businesses another scam reminder

I was recently reminded again of how far scam artists will go to separate people from their money by making use of the internet. The scam I read about took advantage of people who were looking for new jobs (offline) and did this by posting their resume’s on the internet. There were two parts to the scams: One was to scan these resumes for any kind of personal information. In some cases they were able to find social security numbers published which then allowed them apply for credit cards under someone else’s name. The other part involved actually calling the job seeker and posing as a potential employer. Their spin involved explaining they were interested in setting up an interview but needed some personal information to do credit checks and other background checks prior to the actual interview. Once this information was received, you guessed it, more problems. Now some of this just seems like common sense. I for one would not be publishing my social security numbers anywhere on the internet. However, a phone call, while desperate for a job, from a company that sounded legitimate on the phone could perhaps persuade some people to part with their personal information. My own personal experience with an online scam happened a number of years ago. I had a used car for sale and a friend recommended purchasing an online ad. This sounded like a good idea and did not cost much so I did it. Response to the ad was not immediate but over time it did generate some interest with a few calls and some emails. Nothing real serious though until one gentleman sent me an email explaining he was real interested and wanted to know a few more details. I was pretty interested because it seemed like price was not an issue. We began an email dialogue and after several exchanges came the “pitch”: He was interested in purchasing the car but was unable to pick it up. Since he traveled considerably and was currently in the UK he would send a bank check for the full amount plus the cost to ship it. When the check arrived, I would then immediately deposit the check and write another to a shipping broker who would call to pickup the vehicle. My initial reaction was that I’d sold the vehicle. At the time, my understanding of bank checks was that it was similar to a money order and was as good as gold. I didn’t really see how I could lose. However, then doubts came into my mind. Why would someone from the UK, pay full price for my car – without even seeing it or having someone else check it out, and then pay expensive shipping costs to send the car somewhere else? Initially I rationalized that he must be a businessman and that cost was not an issue. But then I thought why would he want my Chevy and do they not sell vehicles where he is? I did some investigating on the internet and found this scenario all too common. It was a scam. I was initially angry that someone would do this to me, but then also scared that it could be done to me and that I could have lost both the car and the money paid for the shipping costs. My story ended turned out ok because I stopped before I parted with the money. However, there are many stories of people who parted with their money before realizing it was wrong. Did I have any special insight which kept me from losing the money? Probably not, except for the fact that it just did not feel right. I compare this online scenario to walking down a dark alley at night. If it does not look right and does not feel right then don’t do it – at least not without some investigation or insight from someone else. In many cases scammers “get away with it” since people are not aware of their methods. At the time I was not aware bank checks could be bad. But they can also take advantage of emotions such as “Entitlement”. I felt I deserved full price for the car, and he was the only one offering it. Either way before parting with your money over the internet, do your research and make sure you are ok with it. It could still be legitimate and most likely a day or two will not hurt to check something out to be sure. Public school vs. home schooling

Most Americans do not home-school their children. However, those who do, certainly have good reasons. Although there are advocates on both sides of this educational issue, it is important to understand why some parents choose to home-school their children. 1)Religious or Philosophical Convictions: Since religion is no longer permitted in the public school system, many home-school parents feel that their children have been short-changed in this area. It is their wish to raise their children in an environment that not only allows religion, but also embraces it. Having deep religious beliefs, parents who home-school for religious reasons are a very passionate people. It is this passion that feeds their children’s educational needs. With the parent in charge, home-schooling can be based solely on religious activities if the parent so chooses. It is also this passion that will allow the parents to teach their children to the best of their abilities. Home-schooling allows the parent to be in charge. 2)Socialization The public school system appears to have allowed a stereotype to be attached to home-schooled children. There are different kinds of structures but these have been categorized into two: the corporate and the non-corporate. The corporate structures are typically the different kinds of corporations which include the Business Corporation, also known as the C-corporation. Also among the corporate structures are the S-corporation and the Close Corporation. For non-corporate structures, we have: Sole proprietorship, the different kinds of Partnerships (General Partnerships, Limited Liability Partnerships, Limited Partnerships) and the Limited Liability Company.
